Why Pumpkin?

How can I get this in the truck?

Maybe I’ll just eat it here.

Fall is here, and pumpkin is the star of the season. While you're getting ready for trick or treating, save a little plain, canned pumpkin for your small dog. It's low in calories and easy to serve in small portions, which is helpful for little pups with sensitive stomachs and a talent for gaining weight. DO NOT FEED THEM PIE FILLING.

1. A Tummy Helper

Pumpkin's fiber can help with both constipation and diarrhea.

For constipation, its fiber and moisture can help soften stool and get things moving.

For diarrhea, soluble fiber absorbs some of the extra water and can help firm up loose stool.

2. A Little Help with Weight Management

An extra pound can put a lot of strain on a Chihuahua or Pekingese mix's joints and spine. Pumpkin is low in calories and high in water and fiber, so a small spoonful can make a meal feel more filling. Swap a little of your dog's regular kibble for pumpkin, and they may feel satisfied with fewer calories.

3. Support for Eyes and Immune Health

  • Pumpkin contains nutrients that can support your small dog's health as they get older:

  • Vitamin A and beta-carotene support eye health and vision.

  • Vitamins C and E support immune health and provide antioxidants.

  • Potassium supports muscle and heart function.

4. Extra Fiber for Anal Gland Support

Small breeds can be prone to anal gland problems. Pumpkin's fiber may help make stools bulkier and firmer, which can put pressure on the anal glands as your dog poops. A little pumpkin in the bowl can be a helpful seasonal treat, too.
